Kinsey / DesForges

Culver City is often missed during visits to LA, so it was mandatory that I stop by the art district this time around. Numerous galleries line up next to one another on Washington and La Cienega including Kinsey / DesForges formerly Black Market Gallery. Currently on view is Angelika J. Trojnarski a Polish born German educated artist fixated on violent imagery. I was a bit more focused on the interior than the art.

Hollywood and the Griffith Observatory

LA is for architecture lovers. Yes this is true, look below the Hollywood veneer and you can find a thriving modern architecture ethos. Silverlake is one of those neighborhoods comprised of many historical homes designed by mid-century modern architects. Some magazines have compared Silverlake to Williamsburg as being the west coast version of the other; I can’t help but dispute this comparison. Sure hipsters inhabit each of these neighborhoods but the architecture sets these two neighborhoods apart, way apart. Set against an industrial background, Williamsburg is filled with brick buildings and factories; Silverlake on the other hand played a major role in modern architecture with numerous Neutras and Schindlers throughout its hillside. That being said we often find ourselves in the neighborhood trainspotting these buildings.

sf

We had a rough start on our trip. It was amateur hour as we left the apt an hour and a half before our flight, during one of the busiest day of the year to travel. What were we thinking? Fortunately we made it and Virgin America did not disappoint. They rescued us from the mile long lines, plucked us out from the crowd and escorted us to the gate safely and securely on our way to SF. Though the lights were quite disco, their entertainment system, Red, was, well… pretty entertaining. Still in beta and a bit buggy in some parts it was nice having chat capabilities with our friends that were seated behind us. Other features included a decent selection of music, programs and videos. Though we weren’t down with the $8 charge per movie. Books, magazines, or newspapers will be available in the future from the system but it wasn’t active during our flight.
